Quote

What could I do? I couldn’t paint, I couldn’t write poetry. What could I do to make him sit up?

On why she had written Story of O for her lover, Jean Paulhan.

Anne Desclos was a French journalist, translator, editor, judge of literary prizes, and novelist. She wrote under the pseudonyms, Dominique Aury and Pauline Réage.  Her graphic, sadomasochistic novel titled Histoire d’O (Story of O) was an enormous, though controversial, commercial success.
