Dear Writers Write Followers

This is the week when we ask you to help support and grow Writers Write. If everybody reading this gave $10, our fundraiser would be over in a few days. We are a small company that carries the costs of top website servers, staff, and programmes. We think Writers Write is special. It is a library for writers. Everything you need is on the site. If Writers Write is special to you too, please take a minute to donate to keep us online and growing. Thank you!

Hooked On Writing Day Seven

Day Seven

Welcome to Day 7 of Hooked on Writing, your free online writing course. This online workbook will help you create a writing habit in 31 days.

Who are you?

Construct great characters in a subtle way.

Aim:

To show how possessions reveal your character.

How:

  1. Open a magazine – or use your character box.
  2. Pick the first character you see.
  3. Write a list of 10 items that you think this character would buy in a supermarket. Don’t overthink this.

    10. ___________________

4. Use the five senses.

In the supermarket:

They hear _____________________________
They see ________________________________
They touch _______________________________
They taste _______________________________
They smell _______________________________

  1. Write the scene where this character buys these items in the supermarket. Write from the viewpoint of this character. You can use first person, second person, or third person. Use internal thoughts, the five senses, dialogue, and body language.

At Night

Use your writing journal here. Write ‘At Night’ at the top of a clean page. Free write or expand on the exercise you’ve completed. (If you want to buy the downloadable workbook, which includes space for these exercises, you can get it in our store.)
