Dear Writers Write Followers

This is the week when we ask you to help support and grow Writers Write. If everybody reading this gave $10, our fundraiser would be over in a few days. We are a small company that carries the costs of top website servers, staff, and programmes. We think Writers Write is special. It is a library for writers. Everything you need is on the site. If Writers Write is special to you too, please take a minute to donate to keep us online and growing. Thank you!

Day Nine

Welcome to Day 9 of Hooked on Writing, your free online writing course. This online workbook will help you create a writing habit in 31 days.

Speculative Genres

Aim:

Using a speculative genre enables the writer to concentrate on the characters, the plot, and then the setting. Think about story lines. What motivates characters? What drives their ambitions? What do they want above all else? What are they willing to live for? What are they willing to die for?

How:

  1. The genre is: Fantasy or Sci-Fi
  2. The plot is: The Quest
  3. Your antagonist’s name is _____________________________________ and they want to destroy the world.
  4. Your protagonist’s name is ________________________________________ and they have to save the world.
  5. Connect the two characters by a family feud or by family, along the lines of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.
  6. Give the antagonist the prop ____________________________________ that the protagonist needs to save the world – something along the lines of the ring in The Lord of the Rings.
  7. How will they get it?
  8. How is the antagonist going to stop them?
  9. The setting is a purple planet. The sky is _____________________________and the grass is _________________________________________________________The water is the colour of __________________________________________________The sun shines for ________hours a day. The planet’s name is ______________and its people are called _______________They are ruled by a king named_______________________________________and they eat ________________________________________ The most important day of their year is _________________________________If the planet were a country it would be _________________________________If you could choose a famous person to be the antagonist, they would be ______________________And the protagonist would be played by _________________________________

  1. Write the opening scene for the novel using all of the information above. Remember to start with an inciting moment.
