Dear Writers Write Followers

This is the week when we ask you to help support and grow Writers Write. If everybody reading this gave $10, our fundraiser would be over in a few days. We are a small company that carries the costs of top website servers, staff, and programmes. We think Writers Write is special. It is a library for writers. Everything you need is on the site. If Writers Write is special to you too, please take a minute to donate to keep us online and growing. Thank you!

Day Eight

Welcome to Day 8 of Hooked on Writing, your free online writing course. This online workbook will help you create a writing habit in 31 days.

Setting is character

Aim:

To have fun with setting.

How:

1. Pick a character from a magazine or your character box.
2. Name them.
3. Describe them in one of the following settings:

  • The restaurant they wait tables in.
  • Volunteering at the shelter for abused women and children.
  • A bookstore about to go out of business.
  • A children’s pre-school concert.

4. Name the setting.
5, Use the five senses:

They hear _____________________________
They see ________________________________
They touch _______________________________
They taste _______________________________
They smell _______________________________

Show the character by their interaction with the setting. How do they react? What do they perceive? Do they have preconceptions?

Result:
