Dear Writers Write Followers

This is the week when we ask you to help support and grow Writers Write. If everybody reading this gave $10, our fundraiser would be over in a few days. We are a small company that carries the costs of top website servers, staff, and programmes. We think Writers Write is special. It is a library for writers. Everything you need is on the site. If Writers Write is special to you too, please take a minute to donate to keep us online and growing. Thank you!

Day 13

Welcome to Day 13 of Hooked on Writing, your free online writing course. This online workbook will help you create a writing habit in 31 days.

Symbology

Aim:

To show how you can use themes and things to add layers to a story.

Example: “My wound is geography. It also is my anchorage, my port of call.”

Pat Conroy uses geography to add layers in The Prince of Tides.

How:

  1. Choose one of the following:

a. Animals
b. Jewellery
c. Perfume
d. Homes
e. Weather
f. Cars

  1. Use your secret-revealing story from the previous exercise. Use one of these items and fit it into the story. Perhaps Isabella has a collection of jewellery that means more than meets the eye.

  1. Will it add to the story? Why will it add to the story?

  1. Create a timeline for story from the previous exercise. It could be set over a century, a year, a day or an hour. You choose.

Result:

You create a story with texture and layers. All good writers use them. Why don’t you?
